Third daughter of the fourth Earl of Mornington and Katharine Elizabeth Forbes, Priscilla Anne Wellesley-Pole married John Fane, Lord Burghersh, in 1811, becoming the eleventh Earl of Westmorland in 1841. Together they had five sons and one daughter, including George Fane pictured here. Lady Burghersh, linguist and artist, exhibited six works at the Royal Society of British Artists between 1833 and 1841, and again in 1843 and 1857. She is best known for her engraved Portrait of the Countess of Mornington with her three sons, Lord Wellesley, the Duke of Wellington and Lord Cowley. Several replicas are known. A pencil study of the child and the mother's left hand belongs to the Frederick and Lucy Herman Foundation in Williamsburg. Our painting is probably a second version of the unlocated painting (see K. Garlick, Sir Thomas Lawrence, a complete catalog of the oil paintings, Oxford, 1989, no. 144, reproduced).
