Slight foxing. - Klipstein 126. In 1886 Käthe Kollwitz attended Karl Stauffer-Bern's painting class at the Berlin School for Women Artists. After further studies in Königsberg and Munich, she settled in Berlin in 1891. In her work, Kollwitz dealt forcefully with the themes of poverty, death and people on the margins of society. In 1919, she was the first woman to become a member of the Prussian Academy of Arts, where she headed the master studio for graphic art from 1928-32. She received numerous awards, but from 1935 she was unofficially banned from exhibiting her work. Her Berlin studio was destroyed by bombing during the war. Käthe Kollwitz is considered the most important German graphic artist and sculptor of the 20th century.
