Description

A CIZHOU MARBLED CLAY BOWL 宋-金 磁州白釉絞胎碗 China, Song-Jin dynasty The bowl is crafted from marbled clay in chocolate-brown and milk-white hues, creating 'feather' patterns beneath a plain white slip band at the rim, all coated with a clear glaze. D.8.9cm NOTE Wares of this kind, known in Chinese as jiaotai, originated during the Tang Dynasty, drawing inspiration from a lacquerware technique. By twisting and blending different colored clays, artisans achieved a sophisticated interplay of light and dark bands, resulting in a distinctive decorative surface that possesses a timeless aesthetic appeal. This technique was later introduced to Japan and referred to as neriage and nerikomi. Major production centers for such vessels during the Song Dynasty included Dengfeng, Dangyangyu, Baofeng, Xin’an, and Wuxiu. The banded decoration created by multi-colored clays mimics natural patterns found in feathers, leaves, wood, and clouds. The intricate and dense pattern on this dish demonstrates the exquisite craftsmanship of Song ceramics.
