238 Ivan DA SILVA BRUHNS ( 1881 - 1980 ) Face on a blue background, 1977 Oil on panel signed lower right, dated on reverse and numbered 2958 27 x 22 cm A Frenchman of Brazilian origin, Ivan da Silva Bruhns began his career as a self-taught artist before studying at the Académie Ranson. He joined the Paris art scene through a network of artists including Maurice Denis, Jacques Villon, Maria Helena Vieira da Silva and Paul Signac. A multidisciplinary artist, da Silva Bruhns explored ceramics, mosaics and textiles, with a particular attraction to the creation of monumental carpets and painting. From the start of his career, the artist adopted an anti-academic stance, drawing inspiration from primitive and non-Western cultures, with the exception of Cubism, which attracted his attention. In the pre-war years, he devoted himself mainly to the creation of woven carpets, which he adorned with marvellous motifs. The artist received prestigious commissions from the Maharadja, the Senat and the Collège de France, as well as from Ruhlmann, Leleu, Majorelle, Adnet...
