Description

DELACHANAL MOUGEOTTE" WALL-MOUNTED PUBLIC LETTERBOX Yellow enameled cast-iron, in the shape of an aedicula topped with a pinecone scale roof, adorned with the "RF" initials of the French Republic. It opens with a casement with apertures indicating in blue letters the progress of the daily lifts, framed by canted sides adorned with scales, and a gadrooned base. Marked "Delachanal, 3 rue Taylor à Paris". c. 1900. Height. 64 cm; Width. 34 cm; Depth. 23 cm. Slight oxidation and missing polychromy. This letterbox belongs to the first cast-iron series put into service by the administration, replacing the old wooden boxes. Manufactured by L. Delachanal in Paris, they were put into service following a circular dated November 15, 1900 issued by Étienne Mougeot, Under-Secretary of State for Post and Telegraphs, who gave them the nickname "Mougeottes".
