COMPAGNIE INTERNATIONALE DES WAGONS LITS COMPANY EMBLEM Polished bronze, featuring the monogram "WL", framed by two lions facing each other on a phylactery, all encircled by laurel branches, on a rectangular wooden panel lacquered midnight blue exactly to the same design. 20th century. The Compagnie Internationale des Wagons-Lits was founded in 1872 by Liège businessman Georges Nagelmackers, with financial backing from King Leopold of Belgium. Leopold of Belgium. Inspired by the model of the night trains launched in the United States by Colonel Pullman's company, with whom he formed an early partnership, he built Europe's first sleeping and dining cars, and in 1883 launched the Grand Express d'Orient between Paris and Constantinople, which became the famous Orient-Express. The two lions on the Company's emblem are a tribute to the Kingdom of Belgium.
