Grebo miniature mask. Liberia, Ivory Coast. H 15.5cm. With central forehead bulge, bulging forehead, tube eyes and beard made of raphia fibers. With certificate of authenticity from Toni Dähler! According to Toni Dähler, the mask was carved after the predecessor died to provide a home for her spirit (see certificate). The Grebo are an ethnic group of around 300,000 people who live on the banks of the Cavally River in southern Liberia. The Cavally River forms the border between Liberia and Côte d'Ivoire. The Grebo are also known as the Central Kru because they are located between two Kru groups. This geographical location of the Grebo and the fact that, like their neighbors, they also speak Kru and only a few masks of them are known, led to many years of confusion: the completely abstract masks of the Kru were mistaken for Grebo. However, the few surviving Grebo masks and their extremely rare figurative sculptures show rather smooth, pleasing forms and are thus stylistically very close to the Mande-speaking Dan in the north. Remnants of blue paint, traces of long use, intact. Provenance: ex collection Toni Dähler, Basel, 1958; ex Neumeister auction M 50, Munich 10 Nov. 2011, lot 523.

Scheits, S. M. - Matthias Scheits ca. 1625/30 - Hamburg - ca. 1700. Matthias Scheits, artistically socialized in the Netherlands, continued to orientate himself towards Dutch genre painting after his return to Hamburg. He captured scenes of peasant life reminiscent of David Teniers and Adriaen von Ostade. The scene shown here was painted in 1695, a few years before Scheit's death, and is thus the latest version of the subject in his oeuvre - he had already created two drawings on this theme in 1675 (Hamburger Kunsthalle, Kupferstichkabinett, inv. no. 29446 and Albertina, Vienna, inv. no. 3686), which correspond compositionally to the painting; another version of the painting is also in Hamburg (Hamburger Kunsthalle, inv. no. 253).
