APIANUS Petrus - AMANTIUS Bartholomeus APIANUS Petrus - AMANTIUS Bartholomeus Inscriptiones sacrosanctae vetustatis... Ingolstadt, Petrus Apianus, 1534 In folio. Rare first edition of this very first work on classical inscriptions printed in Germany, and the world's first printed corpus of classical inscriptions. Although better known for his sumptuous scientific works, Apian was commissioned by the banker Raimund Fugger to publish these ancient inscriptions, most of which were to be found in Fugger's famous collection. At the end of the previous century, Pomponius Leto and his Roman Academy had begun to take an interest in the epigraphy of ancient Rome; this trend eventually gave rise to printed compilations like this one, which not only gave more distant people access to the city's material history, but also enabled inscriptions from all over Europe to be collected and studied together: for Brunet (I, 342), "this collection is the most considerable of its kind that we had at the time." Apian's work played an important role in the transmission of Italian material culture to Northern Europe. The book is beautifully illustrated, with picaresque woodcut borders by Michael Ostendorfer (or Hans Brosamer, depending on the bibliographer), numerous inscriptions depicted in situ and an emblematic device after Dürer. Bound with : BOISSARD Jean-Jacques V - [VI].
