La Carrière d'un Roué ( The Rake's progress) recounts in eight plates the adventures of Tom Rakewell, from the moment he inherits a wealthy merchant's fortune to his end in a madhouse. The descriptions of the scenes in La Carrière du Roué are borrowed from Burke and Caldwell's monograph on Hogarth's engraved work. Our scene 6 takes place in a Covent Garden gambling house, where Tom has just lost his entire fortune. Mad with rage, he kneels down and seems to be cursing fate. The black dog that jumps on him, a symbol of melancholy, suggests Tom's declining mental health. All aspects of the game are represented: on the left, a creditor gives an I.O.U. to a lord; behind the table, an angry aristocrat brandishes a sword; opposite the table, a man turns his back and collects the money he has won, while a clergyman turns away in despair. The man sitting opposite the fire has pistols, and is probably a highwayman who has just lost his money. To the left, a night watchman points up at the smoke billowing from the ceiling, but most people are too obsessed with gambling to care that the building is on fire...
