Ernst, Rudolf bzw. Rudolphe (1854 Vienna - Fonteny-aux Roses 1932). Oriental merchant. Oil on wood. Signed, not inscribed and dat. (c. 1880). 31.7 x 25.6 cm. In a fine frame. Rudolf Ernst is one of the main representatives of late Romantic Oriental painting. His motifs are strongly rooted in the genre and thus depict a particularly picturesque, opulent, even indulgent Orient, as it fully corresponded to Western ideas. He depicted the interiors of palaces, harem chambers, bazaars and stores in particular with a detailed dedication to architecture, ornamentation, garments and everyday objects, some of which he took from photographs and travel sketches. Bernhard Eyb, ... became acquainted with the first Goetheanum at the beginning of his career as a portraitist and saw Rudolf Steiner painting the small dome [1921]. From that moment on, until his death in 1978 at the age of almost 90, his artistic work was dedicated to this new painting impulse of Rudolf Steiner. ...", thinly glazed landscape painting, probably watercolour on white primed canvas, signed and dated "B.
