Rudolf Ernst is one of the main representatives of late Romantic Oriental painting. His motifs are strongly rooted in the genre and thus depict a particularly picturesque, opulent, even indulgent Orient, as it fully corresponded to Western ideas. He depicted the interiors of palaces, harem chambers, bazaars and stores in particular with a detailed dedication to architecture, ornamentation, garments and everyday objects, some of which he took from photographs and travel sketches.
