Ca. 47 x 55.52 cm. Beside the glue-shadowed centerfold partly underl. Marginal tears up to the image, partly somewhat creased, below slight tidemark. - ╔Including: Armillary sphere.╗ La sphere artificielle ou armilaire oblique. Armillary sphere surrounded by 12 smaller depictions (solar systems by various scientists, etc.) and explanations. Color. Engraving by P. Starckman n. N. de Fer for Benardson, Paris 1748. Volume 2: Continuation of Voyage autour du monde (with treatise on winds) Volume 3: Supplément du Voyage autour du monde (including a description of Achin, city of Sumatra, the kingdom of Tonquin & other places in the Indies & the baye de Campêche). An orphan from Weymouth in Dorset, William Dampier (1651-1715) was the first Englishman to land in Australia and the first navigator to circumnavigate the globe three times. His work, originally published in English in 1697, caused a sensation: despite his buccaneering activities, his hydrographic, geographical and scientific observations won him academic acclaim.
