Description

Bernigeroth, Johann Martin (1713 Leipzig 1767). 18th century copper printing plate with motif: Portrait of Lebrecht, Prince of Anhalt-Bernburg. The German nobleman is depicted here as a half-length figure facing left. On the print he is turned to the right. His gaze scrutinizes the viewer. Instead of wearing a wig, he presents himself here with shoulder-length hair. L. holds the baton in his hand. A mountain can be seen in the background on the left and a war scene on the right. The portrait is framed oval by a laurel wreath wrapped in ribbons. At the bottom in front of the frame are all kinds of attributes. Everything rests on a ledge in which the following inscription is chiseled: "LEBRECHT PRINCEPS ANHALTINVS." - Lebrecht was born in Bernburg and was the founder of an Ascanian collateral line. The abbreviation "M.B. sc." lower right (impression then left) in the motif margin is considered by many collections to be the Leipzig draughtsman and engraver Martin Bernigeroth (1670-1733). - With some dark stains, overall good condition. Printing plate from the period. D
