(1838 Hamburg 1928, author of an extensive diary, which is an important source for Hamburg local history research), born in 1875. - Among the views: London, Zurich, Ostend, Antwerp, Innsbruck, Nuremberg, Bad Pyrmont, Cologne Cathedral. - Partly stained.

PHILIPON (Charles) & DORÉ (Gustave). Musée Français-Anglais. Journal of monthly illustrations edited by Ch. PHILIPPON. Paris, 1855-1860. Large in-folio green half-chagrin, spine ribbed and decorated (period binding). Binding worn, rubbed, headbands damaged, spine partly split. Good condition inside. Very rare complete collection (72 no.) of this richly illustrated magazine, by Gustave Doré, among others. A supplement to Le Journal pour rire and Le Journal amusant, the journal changed its title in 1858 to : Le Musée français (n°37 to 72). Created on both sides of the English Channel at the height of the Crimean War, the magazine's early years were marked by a vast campaign of caricatures against the Russians. It also, and above all, enabled the distribution of Gustave Doré's numerous illustrations, in which the latter experimented with various subjects - genre scenes, historical episodes and religious pages - that he would later develop in painting. Autograph signed letter from the author to the American poet Julia Alvarez, on the title page, also signed by Yves Robert and Danièle Delorme. Comprising 2 volumes.
