Vogt, Carl (August Christoph Carl), German-Swiss natural scientist and democratic politician (1817-1895). Ins. Short letter with signature, dat. Bern, Sept. 8 (18)56. qu.8°. 1 sheet, 1 p. inscr. Folded several times, with enclosed. Original envelope to Gustav Soldan, Professor at the Gymnasium in Lausanne: "...with best thanks for silver. I only arrived here yesterday evening, as there was still a lot to do in Fribourg...". - Vogt was the son of the liberal Giessen professor of medicine Philipp Friedrich Wilhelm Vogt (1789-1861) and his wife Louise Follen, who had to emigrate to Switzerland in 1834, and a nephew of the fraternity members Adolf Ludwig Follen, Karl Follen and Paul Follen. Vogt studied medicine and chemistry in Giessen from 1833 (under Justus von Liebig). He was a member of the Giessen fraternity, which was persecuted by the authorities for its political tendencies. After its dissolution, he joined the resulting Corps Palatia Giessen. In 1835 he helped a fellow student to escape from the political police and was also forced to leave Germany. - Cover somewhat damaged. R
