EA 1773, anonym). - Das Werk erschien erneut 1796 und 1798 bei dem ebenfalls fingierten Kölner Drucker Peter Hammer unter dem eindeutigen Titel "Das Grab aller Despoten". Anders als der die wahren Absichten des Verfassers verschleiernde Titel vermuten lässt, handelt es sich nicht um einen (in den Augen etwaiger Zensoren vermutlich langweiligen) Kommentar, sondern vielmehr um die vollständige Übersetzung der ebenfalls anonym erschienenen und einflussreichen "Politique Naturelle" - ein flammendes Plädoyer für die Demokratie des deutschstämmigen Enzyklopädisten Baron d'Holbach (1723-1789). Obwohl deren Titel explizit erwähnt wird, nennt auch von Leth (1788-1809) den tatsächlichen Verfasser nicht. Die Verschleierung der Übersetzung wird im Vorwort noch einmal verstärkt, indem von Leth dort betont, dass die Übersetzung des Originaltextes im Folgenden in größerer Type abgedruckt würde, der Kommentar dagegen hiervon abgesetzt in deutlich kleinerer Type - allein, bis auf die eher unverfänglichen, natürlicherweise hervorgehobenen Kapitelüberschriften ist der gesamte Text weiterhin in gleichbleibend kleiner Type gehalten, womit er bei der Zensur als bloßer "Kommentar" durchginge. - Die Titelvignette des ersten Bandes ist offenbar Teil der programmatischen Intentionen des Übersetzers: Sie zeigt drei Putti, von denen die zwei obersten, mit Insignien der Erleuchtung/Weisheit (linker Putto, Symbol der Sonne auf Brust) und des Glaubens (rechter Putto, Kreuz in der linken Hand) einem dritten Putto nachblicken, der ob einer ihm entrissenen Maske sein Gesicht hinter Händen verbergend in Begleitung eines Fledermäuschens seinem Absturz entgegensegelt. - "Leth gehörte nach den Forschungen Heinrich Scheels zum Kreis der süddeutschen Jakobiner, der auch in Verbindung zu revolutionären Zirkeln Ulms stand und durch französische Soldaten davor bewahrt wurde, von Soldaten der österreichischen Interventionsarmee aus seiner Heimat verschleppt zu werden" (K.-K. Contemp. flamed full calf on five raised bands with red edges, blind tooled fillets, rich spine gilt and two spine labels (slightly rubbed and bumped). - The work was published again in 1796 and 1798 by the also fictitious Cologne printer Peter Hammer under the unambiguous title "Das Grab aller Despoten" ("the grave of all despots"). Contrary to what the title, which disguises the author's true intentions, suggests, it is not a commentary (presumably boring in the eyes of any censors), but rather the complete translation of the influential "Politique Naturelle", also published anonymously - a fiery plea in favour of democracy by the German-born encyclopaedist Baron d'Holbach. Although its title is explicitly mentioned, von Leth does not name the actual author either. The concealment of the translation is reinforced once again in the preface, where von Leth emphasises that the translation of the original text would be printed in larger type below, while the commentary would be printed separately in much smaller type - apart from the rather innocuous, naturally emphasised chapter headings, the entire text is still kept in the same small type, which would allow it to pass as mere "commenta
