An orphan from Weymouth in Dorset, William Dampier (1651-1715) was the first Englishman to land in Australia and the first navigator to circumnavigate the globe three times. His work, originally published in English in 1697, caused a sensation: despite his buccaneering activities, his hydrographic, geographical and scientific observations won him academic acclaim.
