Rare first edition of the epistolary novel. - The map shows a plan of ancient Taranto. Vincenco C. (1770-1823) describes a fantastic, ancient civilization that flourished in Italy before the Greek colonization during Magna Graecia and was to serve as a stimulus for a spiritual and mental rebirth of Italy, which was to spring from its own traditions and not from foreign influences. With this book, Cuoco exerted a significant influence during the Risorgimento. - Volumes 1-2 published anonymously, volume 3 names C. as translator from the Greek (fictitious). - Somewhat waterstained, endpapers renewed, vol. 1 with hs. Owner's inscription on title page.
