Detmold,(J.H.).

Marginal drawings. Brschwg., Vieweg 1844. 4 pp., 116 p. Cloth hardcover (somewhat rubbed). Valentin I, 201. coll. Borst 2106. first edition. - The opposition lawyer Detmold (1807-1856) was sentenced to prison or a fine of 300 thalers after several years of conflict with the pre-March Hanoverian government because of its repeated breaches of the constitution with other members of the opposition, but unlike the other convicts he was not pardoned by the king. In order to pay the fine, Detmold published two "jokes", "testimony to his bizarre sense of humor as well as his deep knowledge of human nature" (this and "Anleitung zur Kunstkennerschaft"). It is "a political children's tale and the negotiations that have become so popular... of an art club in which the gentlemen Meyer of the whole alphabet debate about the difficult task of restoring their Venus statue listed under no. 14 of the inventory" (Frensdorff in ADB V, 84). - Foxing. - Stamp of an aristocratic library on title page.
