Macholl. Visitor's book of the German-French cognac distillery formerly Gebrüder Macholl Munich (cover title). Fol. With numerous hs. Entries, Mchn. 1900-1928, on 66 leaves, and 87 w. Maroquin cloth boards over wooden boards with 4 metal corner mounts and blind-stamped title. (Signs of wear, some edges somewhat rubbed). The brothers Leopold and Moritz Macholl settled in Munich in 1874, after Leopold's brother-in-law Max Landauer set up a brandy distillery and liqueur factory in Heilbronn in 1861 and took Leopold into the business in 1866 ("Landauer & Macholl"). - The book begins with the entries of Luitpold, Prince Regent of Bavaria (April 25, 1902) and Ludwig Prince of Bavaria (Jan. 31, 1901). - Further visitors were (initially on pasted-in sheets) various Munich associations (Sozialwissenschaftlicher Verein). Munich associations (Sozialwissenschaftlicher Verein, 1903; Akademischer Maschinen-Ingenieur-Verein, 1901; Polytechnischer Verein, 1901; Verein junger Drogisten, 1904; Verband der Rabattsparvereine, 1907; Münchener Rechtspraktikanten Verein (1908); Akademischer Chemiker Verein, 1909; Staatswissenschaftliche Abteilung der Münchener Freien Studentenschaft, 1911). Max von Widnmann, "Gemeinschaftliche Lektüre" 1869/70, inscription Max Widnmann fecit on the side, green and brown patinated bronze, large-format depiction of Francesca da Rimini, probably with her husband Paolo Malatesta's stepbrother, reading a book together, symbolising the connection between the two people, who are accused of adultery in various traditions (the best known is probably Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy), for which she and her lover were murdered by her husband Giovanni Malatesta, in medieval dress on a small rectangular plinth, mounted on a dark brown stained wooden base, in very good condition according to age, bronze h 79 cm, total h 93 cm. Enclosed: Book "Maximilian von Widnmann - Leben und Werk", Anneliese-Senger-Stiftung, Munich 2019, the sculpture is mentioned on p. 168. Artist information: actually Maximilian Widnmann, from 1887 Ritter von Widnmann German sculptor (1812-1895), studied in Munich at the Academy of Fine Arts under Prof. Konrad Eberhard and Prof. Ludwig Michael von Schwanthaler, travelled to Italy, then initially worked in one of Schwanthaler's workshops, then freelanced in Munich, received commissions from King Ludwig I and took over Schwanthaler's professorship at the Academy in 1848.
