Jeu des grâces, (variant) (France, circa 1880) Jeu des grâces, (variant). (France, circa 1880). Two elements, 48 cm long. Two turned wooden rods bearing a 10 cm-high flared bowl with a 7 cm-diameter opening at one end; the junction between the rod and the bowl is made of blackened wood. The bowls are made of boxwood. A game of skill similar to Jeu des grâces, which was very popular during the Restoration period. Each player uses a rod to throw a cloth ball contained in the cup, with the other player having to retrieve it from his own cup. The diameter of the cup is small enough to make the game very difficult, even more so than the Jeu des grâces from which it was inspired. A reference to this game can be found on page 225 of Henry René d'Allemagne's Sports et Jeux d'adresse ("Divers accessoires du jeu de volant et du jeu des grâces"). This game made a few timid reappearances during the 19th century, but never really took hold. Original wood defect on one of the turned boxwood cups (a knot in the wood has created a split).

Almanac decorated with 4 fashion figures engraved by Gatine after Henry Corbould. French translation of an almanac published at the same date in English under the title The mirror of the graces, or the English lady's costume. Printed bookplate of Louis Becker. A fine copy in a romantic binding.

In-12, blond glazed calf, ornate ribbed spine, red mar. title-pieces, triple gilt fillet framing the boards, interior lace, untrimmed, gilt head (Bedford). This anonymous biography was first published shortly after the execution of the famous brigand in 1721, and became one of the great bestsellers of the period, printed many times and translated into all European languages. This edition is illustrated with a frontispiece portrait and a series of 10 figures engraved outside the text and captioned in Dutch. A very fine copy in a signed English binding. Ex-libris Antoine Bordes and Clarence S. Bemens. Also included: Apologie de Cartouche, ou le Scélerat sans reproche, par la grace du pere Quesnel. La Haye, 1731. In-12, modern vellum.
