Over time, minerals replace the organic materials, preserving the shape of the egg. The first dinosaur eggs were discovered in the 19th century. Since then, they have been found in various parts of the world, including Mongolia, China, Argentina and the United States. Some of the most famous discovery sites include the Gobi Desert in Mongolia and the Yixian Formation in China. Dinosaur eggs have a hard shell made of calcium carbonate, similar to that of modern bird eggs. The shell has pores that allow gas exchange, which was crucial for embryo respiration. The study of dinosaur eggs continues to reveal amazing details about life on Earth millions of years ago.
