Gäbelkhover (1539-1616) was born in Memmingen and completed his studies in Zübingen and Bologna, where he received his doctorate in medicine. In 1563, he entered the service of the Duke of Württemberg, whose court physician he was to remain for 36 years. In addition to his official activities as a physician, Gäbelkhover was also a historiographer and archivist who amassed a very large collection of collectanea on the history of Baden-Württemberg, which ended up in the archives in Stuttgart after his death.
