OLBRICH, Joseph Maria (1867-1908). Architektur. Berlino: Wasmuth, 1904. One of the most complete copies to have appeared on the market of this scarce publication containing plans by Olbrich, the great Secessionist architect best known for his building for the Secession Building in Vienna and for the buildings for the artists' colony in Darmstadt, as well as the magnificent Leonard Tietz AG warehouse in Düsseldorf. His idea of architecture involves spaces conceived as works of art in their own right, curating every element of design, from exterior and interior architecture to linen, cutlery, porcelain, and ceramics. The three volumes of 'Architektur'' fully document his work and artistic conception as well as representing an important manifesto of Art Nouveau and the Secession. The plates that make up the 6 portfolios were produced in collotype, which limited the number of copies produced, as is evident from the rarity of the collection (OCLC finds ten copies only). 3 parts in 6 portfolios, folio, (490 x 330mm). 449 plates in collotype (a few plates with minor marginal chipping). Chinese carved jade archer's ring. Skillfully carved along a russet inclusion to depict a cat and foliage. Characters carved along the pale jade exterior. With a wuwu cyclical date. Included in this auction is a box designed to hold this jade as well as a collection of 22 other lovely carved works also offered here. Provenance: Collection of Jerry O'Brien, Wichita, Kansas; thence by descent. Jerry O'Brien (February 6, 1902-June 2, 1951) was a business mogul and public figure in Wichita, Kansas throughout the first half of the 20th century. He began working at Wilcoxon-Searcy before founding his own joint venture, the Roberts-O'Brien Company, in 1930 at the age of 28. During World War II he manufactured airplane parts and, by 1941, had opened up a company in his own name, the Jerry O'Brien Company. Throughout the 1940s he manufactured car awnings under the name Weather Master Car Awning Company. During this time he also served on numerous public and private committees. He died suddenly of a heart attack at the age of 49 on June 2, 1951. During his life he collected these excellent jades and assembled them in the silk box offered in this sale. NASA. LARGE FORMAT. Superb photograph of the famous Ring nebula in eastern Lyra. It is illuminated by a central white dwarf or planetary nebula nucleus (PNN) of visual magnitude 15.75. All the inner parts of this nebula have a blue-green hue, caused by the emission lines of doubly ionized oxygen at 495.7 and 500.7 nm. In the outer region of the ring, part of the reddish hue is due to hydrogen emission at 656.3 nm. M57 is an example of the class of planetary nebulae known as bipolar nebulae. In this composition lies all the resolving power of the Hubble Space Telescope. Vintage chromogenic print. Numbering on front. Label on back. 40.6 x 40.6CM with margins.
