Volume 1 (of 2). With engraved title, 2 armorial engravings and 112 engravings on 110 plates, all in later, but old coloring with heightened opaque white. Amsterdam, Blaeu en van Someren, 1697. folio. 9 vols, 220 pp. Leather binding (heavily rubbed and bumped, spine and edges renewed later, book block loose). "Jan Commelin was the successful director of the 'Artsenij-Hoff' of the city of Amsterdam, which he founded. Through his close connection with influential patrons from the ranks of the East India Company, he made it one of the richest in Europe" (Nissen p. 85). - Old American library stamp on endpapers and rear inside cover, book block broken several times, first and last quires loose and somewhat frayed at the sides, small paper tear in the binding of plates 25-29, 47/48 and 85-89 as well as the corresponding pages 49-57, 87-91 and 165-173, brittle ink stain in the text of pp. 151/152.
