Front. and 14 copper plates. 456 (recte 464) pp. (without pp. 3-8). Brown cloth (spine damaged, chipped and rubbed). Hayn-Got. I, 412: "Vorläufer Casanovas"; cf. Blackmer 162 and Atabey 129 (French original edition). - Fictional memoirs. B. fought under Eugene of Savoy in the Span. War of Succession in Belgium a. Italy a. later in the Balkans (also several battle plans). In 1720 he converted to Islam and became provincial governor of the Porte. - Stronger signs of wear, beginning with marginal tears, browned and stained.

HAMILTON (Count Antoine). Contes - Mémoires du Comte de Grammont. Paris, Didot l'ainé, 1815. 6 vol. in-16, midnight blue long-grain morocco, gilt filets and fine serrated roulette framing the covers, spines with ornate nerves (Motet). From the Collection des meilleurs ouvrages de la langue française dédiée aux dames. The collection of tales includes: Le Bélier, Histoire de Fleur d'Épine, Les quatre Facardins. With a note on Hamilton's life in the Mémoires du comte de Grammont. The French-speaking Scottish writer Antoine Hamilton (1646-1720) was the successful originator of the satirical and libertine tale in the 18th century. He was the brother-in-law of Philibert, Comte de Gramont (1621-1707). The latter, compromised during the Fronde, took refuge at the court of Charles II of England, which Hamilton describes piquantly. Covers slightly rubbed. A charming copy, on wove paper, in blue morocco by Motet, a Parisian bookbinder of the first half of the 19th century.
