GOBELINS tapestry The gardening children, the month of September In this exceptional and very rare composition, we can see four children, one holding the head of a goat trying to eat a bunch of grapes, another sitting next to his dog and the others busy harvesting grapes, perched on a ladder or near a vine against a background of greenery. To the left of the composition is a large basket laden with fruit, next to which a porcupine is eating a piece of fruit. Immediately behind is a fountain, all set against a background of greenery. The composition ends with a border of fruit and flower garlands. Wool chains, wool and silk wefts, circa 1720. 267x420cm, 317x420cm unfolded The tapestry is in very good condition, with very few restorations and very well-preserved vibrant colors. Lined and folded at the top, braid added. In 1664, Charles Lebrun designed the Children Gardeners tapestry commissioned by Louis XIV for the Mobilier National. Reweavings of this hanging can be found in the Musée de Saumur, the Château de Pau and the Uffizi Museum in Florence. Tapestries woven for the King were made of silk and gold thread. The first series, probably made under Colbert, were bought back by the King in 1685. This tapestry is part of the "Enfants Jardiniers" hanging, based on cartoons by Charles Lebrun (1619-1690), the King's first painter and director of the Manufacture Royale des Gobelins. This hanging represents the different seasons. Here, we're dealing with autumn, and more specifically with the month of September. Several other series, including our piece, were woven at the Gobelins and presented to Ambassadors. In the Musée Jacquemart André tapestry exhibition catalog, p. 69, we find a tapestry with the same border as ours, depicting spring.
