New edition of this hippological classic. 36 out-of-text copper-engraved plates, including: a title-frontispiece after Charles Parrocel (bound at the head of the second volume), a portrait of the author after Louis Tocqué (here spelled "Toquet"), and 34 plates (including 4 folding) mainly after Charles Parrocel and Guillaume Dheulland. Provenance: Michel Larcher, Marquis d'Arcy (ex-libris vignettes), then Comtes d'Antioche (ex-libris armorial vignettes, covering the other vignettes).

In-folio, marbled calf, ornate ribbed spine, red morocco title-piece, wide gilt lace framing the covers, red edges (period binding). Second edition of one of the finest early works on the horse. The illustrations include a frontispiece by Parrocel depicting the education of Achilles with a medallion portrait of Louis XV, a vignette with the coat of arms of Charles de Lorraine, Grand Écuyer, 3 historiated vignettes by Parrocel, 10 plates engraved by A. Coquart, and 14 plates by Parrocel including 6 equestrian portraits. A good copy. Some wear to binding, small very light wetness in margins of several leaves.

Complete with portrait after Toquet, frontispiece after Parrocel and 33 plates (mostly after Parrocel), some of them folding. Handwritten bookplate on title of vol. 2, Charles d'Augy 1756 (Mennessier de La Lance, II, 28).
