The name Merkaba means "chariot" in Hebrew, from the root rkb which means "to be seated, to be carried, mounted on a chelou, a chariot". The term does not appear in the vision of the Book of Ezekiel. KATSUSHIKA HOKUSAI: A COMPLETE SET OF THREE HOKUSAI'S PICTURES BOOKS KATSUSHIKA HOKUSAI: A COMPLETE SET OF THREE HOKUSAI'S PICTURES BOOKS By Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849) Japan, dated 1849 (Kaei 2) Woodblock print albums. Ink and color on paper. Each ehon (picture book) sewn together and containing various illustrations. The three volumes titled Hokusai gafu (Hokusai’s picture book), publisher Eirakuya Toshiro. Each volume begins with a scene of a Noh performer in Okina, an auspicious dance play on the theme of longevity and good fortune. Volume 1 opens with a scene of the Sanbaso dance, and volume 2 begins with a dancer wearing the okina mask of an elderly god. Volume 3 shows Senzai wearing an elegant costume—like the one worn by the dancer in volume 1—and carrying a lacquer box that might contain a mask. These pages feature intense color and clearly were intended to refer to the world of the gods, which in Noh performances were evoked by music, stylized movement, and masks and costumes that obscured the actors’ physical features. By beginning each volume with an evocation of a benevolent god, Hokusai was expressing his personal understanding of the intimate relationship between the divine and visible realms. Some fading, minor stains, wear to the covers, loose threads with some associated loose pages, few tears, and some creasing. Egyptian Bronze Figure of Osiris. Late Period, 664-332 B.C. Solid cast mummiform figure standing on an integral plinth; the god cloaked in a tight-fitting shroud, sporting the ostrich-plumed atef crown with uraeus, divine beard, and holding the characteristic crook and flail regalia; traces of gilding remain; mounted on a custom-made display stand. Cf. Roeder, G., Ägyptische Bronzefiguren II, Berlin, 1956, pl. 22e, for similar figurine. 811 grams total, 21 cm including stand (8 1/4 in.). Osiris is a deity who represents death and fertility and is commonly regarded as the quintessential god of rebirth. Though he was once a mortal ruler, as a deceased entity, his domain was the Underworld. Abydos was the primary centre of Osiris’s cult, where a renowned yearly celebration of the god was held. Modelled in the round as a nude male figure with hanks of hair to the shoulders and necklace of beads; joined directly to his back, an eagle with its textured head arched over that of Ganymede; separate lower left leg and upper arm to the human figure, separate wings for the eagle; repaired. 1.74 kg, 44.5 cm (17 1/2 in.). In Greek mythology, Ganymede was a divine hero whose handsome looks attracted the attention of Zeus, who had him transported to Olympus by a huge eagle, where he was to serve as a cup-bearer to the gods.
