August Lucas was a representative of German Romantic painting. Like so many artists at the time, the Darmstadt-born self-taught artist embarked on an extended journey to Italy in 1829 - 1834 for study purposes. In addition to the cities of Rome and Naples, Lucas was particularly interested in the Italian countryside around the town of Olevano near Rome, which became a center of attraction for a number of artists and eventually a so-called artists' colony. The landscape around Olevano corresponded less to the Arcadian ideal and was instead characterized by many oak forests and a wilder, harsher nature with junipers and roses. Like many of his fellow artists, August Lucas was enraptured by the untouched and little-known, rugged beauty of this region. The planned trip turned into a four-year stay, which was forced to end due to the artist's financial difficulties. The numerous studies served Lucas back home in Darmstadt as inspiration and models for a number of drawings and paintings. In his works, nature stands out as a carrier of mood, surrounded by soft light, resulting in deeply harmonious scenes that clearly convey Lucas' affection for the Italian landscape.
