With a splendid black-ground title border by Daniel Hopfer and a large woodcut on the last page. Restored brown leather binding with scroll and single stamp decoration on the covers. (Spine rebacked in the 18th century, without the clasps and fittings; corners renewed; rubbed). VD16 D-758. first Low German edition, of great rarity. The Sachsenspiegel, written in the first quarter of the 13th century, is the oldest Middle Low German prose work and the most widespread and longest lasting collection of German laws. The author was Eike von Repgow, who was probably active as an alderman himself. The law book summarizes the customary law handed down orally in the areas of land law and feudal law. The wonderful, black-ground title border around the title printed in red is monogrammed "DH" at the head in a leaf mask and was therefore created by Daniel Hopfer (1470-1536), the main master of the Augsburg Renaissance. The woodcut on the last sheet - it is anonymous - shows the enthroned emperor surrounded by spiritual and secular princes, with a supplicant kneeling before the emperor. In the foreground on the right is an "alta capella" on horseback. Complete copy except for the white sheet at the end. The title mounted (small loss in the white outer margin). Traces of moisture throughout. Individual leaves dusty. Some marginal tears with old backing. Ownership entry by Baron Per Hierta, Främmestad, dated 1905 on flyleaf, above it "ex auctione Böckingeri" in another hand. Erased ownership entry P.J.Müller on the title page.
