A question of the whole holy order of the card players of the Karnöffel / to the Concilium of Mantua. 1537 [Wittenberg, Nickel Schirlentz, 1537]. Cl.-4°. 4 unnum. (A4 size). Stapled. VD16 F-1971. Benzing, Luther 3257. Apparently an extremely rare printing of the satirical work, possibly written by Luther, intended for the council summoned to Mantua by Pope Paul III in agreement with Emperor V. However, as the German Protestant princes and France showed no interest in the church assembly, it was first published and then finally canceled. The carnival spoon game is one of the oldest card games and is related to the tarot; the carnival spoon is the card that tricks all the others - including the Pope and the Emperor. The text concludes: "Given at Rome / Ala Campana bey dem Campflor / hinder dem Turre denona / zwischen den andern Tabern / inn die Bulle cænæ Domini / hart fur dem Eclipsi des Concilii / durch den deudschen Pasquil / Protheum genant/Anno 1537. indictione nulla. Anno Pontificatus Pauli 4."

Pommel with "H" monogram (Henri III, founder of the Order). Single-branch hilt decorated with laurel leaves and flowers. Keyboard with shield motif, decorated with the cross of the Holy Spirit surmounted by the dove, framed by two flames of the Holy Spirit and the monogram "H" of the founder of the Order. Triangular blade engraved, gilded and blued in thirds, marked on the heel "P. Knecht à Solingen". Leather scabbard with two gilded and engraved brass fittings. Cap knob decorated with an armet. B.E. Restoration period. History: Provided for in the order's costume description, the order's sword is the rarest item to be found today.

The Order of Saints Maurice and Lazarus is a Roman Catholic dynastic order of knighthood granted by the Royal House of Savoy. It is the second oldest order of chivalry in the world, as its lineage dates back to 1098 AD, and is one of the few orders of chivalry recognized by papal bull, in this case by Pope Gregory XIII. Formerly, the order was granted by the Kingdom of Italy (1861-1946) with the heads of the House of Savoy as kings of Italy. Originally a knightly order of noble character, it was restricted to subjects of noble families with proof of at least eight noble great-grandparents. The military and noble character of the order was and still is combined with a Roman Catholic character. After the abolition of the monarchy and the foundation of the Italian Republic in 1946, the legacy of the order is maintained by the pretenders of the House of Savoy and the Italian throne in exile.
