With a shotgun printer's mark on the title page and a full-page metal cut on the verso of the title page. Modern half calf binding (signed Hedberg) with gilt-stamped spine label and some gilt to spine. Not in Adams. Moreau I, p. 106: 80. Pettegree & Walsby, French Books III & IV: 75020. 13th century Ligurian-born Jacobus de Varazze became famous above all for his collection of legends of the saints, the "Legenda aurea"; the "Mariale", first printed in 1497, describes all the characteristics of the Virgin Mary in 160 sections. The title page with various old handwritten entries, including the name of Ludovicus Ruffonis. A thoroughly unfresh copy. Moisture mark in the lower margin at the fold through a large part of the book. Some spotting throughout, occasional soiling, the title reinforced with strips of Japanese paper in the margin on the verso. The metal cut on the verso of the title page somewhat clumsily colored in old.
