Engraved portrait and frontispiece title by W. de Broen. New edition of the two major works by Hugo Grotius (1583-1645): The Law of War and Peace and On the Freedom of the Seas (Mare Liberum), the first work to deal with questions of public law. This fine edition includes comments by German philologist Johann-Fridrich Gronovius, a close friend of Grotius, and French jurisconsult Jean Barbeyrac.

Tan calf, spine ribbed and decorated, title page in red marble, gilt arms in center (period binding). Small tear at tail cap. A fine copy bearing the coat of arms of Jean-Jacques IV de MESMES comte d'AVAUX (1675-1741), known as the Bailli de Mesmes. Knighted in Malta at the age of one, he became its Grand Master and Ambassador to France in 1715. (OHR 1328.)
