Baroque animal still life St goldfinch, sitting on a branch under a tree, in front of it his nest, from which an egg has fallen out and broken, next to it a snail and a cockchafer, fine allegorical Baroque painting in muted colours, in Christian mythology the goldfinch stands for the resurrection - to alleviate Jesus' pain on the cross, The egg is also an allegory for the resurrection, as are the vineyard snail and the cockchafer as animals that are active in spring, oil over red bolus ground on canvas, 18th cent. Century, the stretcher on the reverse with multiple numberings probably from earlier exhibitions and illegibly inscribed in lead "B[......]", old retouching and varnish partially yellowed, pressure marks on the reverse due to the later (late 19th century) stretched stretcher, beautifully framed, rebate dimensions approx. 47 x 37 cm.
