Zt. - Without the often missing engraved title with date 1619. Title with date 1619; the typographical error in the typograph. Title (voluminae instead of volumine) corrected as usual. VD17 23:240026H. - An edition, probably printed in Germany, of the satirical writings in the form of forged Latin letters produced in the circle of German humanists (Crotus Rubianus and others).

Contemporary full vellum with handwritten titling, in very good condition (edge of 1st board slightly detached). Some scattered spotting, occasional light scorching, paper missing from title page, otherwise very good condition. A rare first edition, which was reprinted several times over the course of a century, despite the ban on the Remontrants' theses. This famous collection of letters is a defense of the theses of the Remontrant party by its most illustrious representatives, in particular ARMINIUS and GROTIUS. The editors Limborch and Hartsoeker intended these letters to demonstrate the orthodoxy of the Remontrant movement." J. Arminius (1560 - 1609), minister of the Reformed Church in the Netherlands, opposed the severity of the Calvinist doctrine of predestination, preferring the idea of conditional election. The most famous of the Remontrants was undoubtedly Hugo Grotius (1583-1645), the great intellectual who first defined what international law should be, and contributed to the law of peace and war, and the definition of natural law. . This book contains 25 letters by Grotius.
