Description

Aquila, Caspar (d.i. Kaspar Adler). Against the mocking liar and unshamed slanderer M. Eßlebium Agricolam. Necessary responsibility / and serious warning / against the Interim. Apologia M. Casparis Aquilae Bischoff zu Salfeldt. M.D.XLVIII. [Magdeburg, Chr. Rödinger, 1548]. Cl.-4°. 6 unnum. (pagination: A4, B2). Modern paperback binding. VD16 A-280. One of three printed variants from the same year. Kaspar Adler (1480-1556), who had met Erasmus in Italy, is considered one of Luther's most important collaborators on his Bible translation. This work is the first against the Augsburg Interim, which he also opposed with his "Christian Objections to the Interim", which so outraged Charles V that he put a bounty of 5,000 guilders on Adler's head. Adler had to go into hiding for a long time, but later returned to his position as Lutheran superintendent in Saalfeld. Spotty throughout.
