Description

Abbé Jean BOULBAIN (Saint-Brieuc, 1911 - Rennes, 1973) "Notre Dame de Bonne Nouvelle" in Paimpol. Terracotta in high relief, monogrammed lower right. Height: 35 cm. Width: 17.8 cm. Our composition is faithfully inspired by the 17th-century statue of Notre-Dame de Bonne Nouvelle offered for the veneration of the faithful in Paimpol's eponymous church. It also incorporates elements of the Tree of Jesse, sculpted in the 19th century to include the statue in an altarpiece that can still be seen today. A comparable example, but polychrome enamelled and signed by the Henriot factory, is preserved in a private collection (reproduced in P. Théallet & B.-J. Verlingue, Encyclopédie des faïences de Quimper, La Reinette, Tour, 2005, T. IV, p. 112). Patroness of sailors, Notre-Dame de Bonne Nouvelle is celebrated in Paimpol on December 8. On the Day of Pardon, her statue is carried in procession through the streets of the town. Pierre Loti, in Pêcheur d'Islande, evokes this feast day, also sung by Théodore Botrel.
