Attributed to Jean-François-Théodore GECHTER (Paris, 1795-1844). Bonaparte crossing the Great St. Bernard Pass. Unsigned patinated bronze. Height: 63.5 cm. Length : 53 cm. In this work, unanimously attributed to Gechter, the artist deals with one of his favorite subjects: the equestrian statue. This theme enabled him to combine the historical subjects he loved with the animal sculpture he was particularly fond of. Here we find the ardor and romanticism so dear to Gechter. Just think of his Charles Martel, his Saint Joan of Arc or his Francis I. The largest and rarest version of his Bonaparte after David's famous painting is presented here. In addition to its aesthetic characteristics, the perfect casting and extremely fine chasing of this proof make it an exceptional bronze.
