Round TABATIERE in burgundy-lacquered composite material. The lid is decorated in bas-relief with a white bust effigy of Jean-Paul Marat from an engraving by Lambert-Antoine Claessens. It is surrounded by the motto: "N'AYANT PU ME CORROMPRE IL MONT ASSASSINE". Protected by curved glass, it is encircled by brass. Late 18th century. Height: 3.1 cm. Diameter: 8.3 cm (Minor accidents). Marat, nicknamed "the incorruptible", was assassinated on July 13, 1793 by Charlotte Corday, who considered him the tyrant most responsible for the revolutionary massacres. Arrested at the scene of the crime, she was guillotined four days later. Revolutionaries and royalists each had their own martyr.
