Description

A fine Chinese famille rose 'Sanxing' vase, Yongzheng

H.: 44,5 cm Provenance: An important British private collection. Reference: Book 'China Without Dragons: Rare Pieces from Oriental Ceramic Society Members', The Oriental Ceramic Society, p. 346 and 347. Comparisons Altrod Edward Hippisley, & Sketch of the History of Ceramic Art in China. With a Catalogue of the Hippisley Collection of Chinese Porcelains', Report of US National Museum, 1900, pl. 4, no. 32 (very similar vase with slightly different layout of the design, attributed to the Kangxi period). Sotheby's Hong Kong, 7 May 2002, lor 511 (very similar, slightly smaller vase). The highly colourful, if somewhat rough, painting manner of this vase characterizes the earliest porcelains produced at non-imperial Jingdezhen kilns in this colouration, including the foreign rose-pink enamel. Soon after, the colour scheme was standardized to the famille rose palette, where the enamels were more subdued in tone. The form of this vase is also characteristic of these usarly pieces, done around the very end of the Kangxi (1623-1722) and the beginning of the Yongzheng reign.
