Modern Photography Umbo (Otto Umbehr) 4 b/w photographs. Each silver gelatin print on Agfa-Brovira photographic paper. 1960s. Sheet dimensions from 13 x 11 cm to 16.8 x 11 cm. Each with photographer's stamp on verso with copyright information and additional handwritten annotations on the artist and work, additionally with further annotations in pencil. - Paper somewhat yellowed in places. Corners bumped and partly creased. Some soiling, also on verso. Overall still good. Excellent, powerful impressions. The paintings of the following artists are depicted: - Emil Nolde, "Die Familie", 1931 - Karl Schmidt-Rottloff "Patrokliturm in Soest", 1922 - Werner Gilles "Der Heilige Georg", 1945 - Werner Gilles "Heimkehr aus der Totenstadt" (From the Orpheus cycle), 1922 - With his work as a photographer and photojournalist, Umbo is considered one of the most important representatives of the Bauhaus school in the field of photography, his pictorial language was eccentric and quite different from New Objectivity. Umbo's artistic career was interrupted when the National Socialists seized power and during the war; after 1945 he moved from Berlin to Hanover, where he lived until his death. There he worked as a photographer for the Hannoversche Presse. Our photographs, all of which show paintings by well-known German artists of classical modernism, are from his late work. 4 b/w photographs. Each with photographer's stamp with copyright information and additional handwritten annotations to the artist and work on the verso, additionally with further annotations in pencil. - Paper somewhat yellowed in places.
