Throughout the artist's long career, which has now spanned more than 70 years, there is evidence of a prescription for depicting the here and now, an art of "painting in the present tense", as Katz himself describes it. In his portraits, he depicts family members, friends and acquaintances alongside his everlasting muse and wife Ada in a strikingly figurative, almost simple and stylized manner. Similar to his monumental works, he uses a reduced formal language in our prints, which at the same time intensively conveys the characteristic nature of the sitter with a feeling for the essential. Not shying away from any artistic medium of expression, he masterfully transfers painting into the medium of printmaking: using an etching needle and etching fluid, he brings the facial shapes, hair contours and items of clothing to the page, conceiving the surface as a homogeneous plane to be formed from the colors black and white. High contrasts are created iteratively and full of tension, which at the same time reflect the constant laughter. The result is a homage to joy, echoing on paper. 11 works. Each photengraving and aquatint etching on strong, hand-amde white Twinrocker. Each signed and numbered. Spot-mounted to mat's back and framed in high quality under glass in handmade frames (unopened). With the accompanying original linen box and luxe book with 11 poems. - Very few prints with very isolated, very tiny stain or dusting, all in all seemingly very good and impeccably fine. Linne box on the outside only with two hardly visible surface abrasions, all in all very good. Throughout splendid, burr- and picturesque-like, in blacks wonderful velvety impressions of the female portraits, each with blindly impressed facet and clear drawn plate mark, with wide margin, each with deckle edge all around. - Complete portfolio by one of the most celebrated contemporary artists of our time in an unmistakably memorable style and lively black and white contrast. - Each one of 30 copies. - From the portfolio "You Smile and the Angels Sing". - Print by Christopher T.
