American Modernism Minimalism Tuttle, Richard o.T. (Composition with lines). 1976. pencil on light brown wove paper. 23.2 x 16.5 cm. Monogrammed and dated verso and with directional arrow. Inserted in passepartout backing in spots, detached and framed under glass There again monogrammed, dated and with directional arrow. - Edges sporadically barely noticeably bumped. A delicate crease in the upper right, a faint brown stain in spots on the verso. Overall very good. Poetic and reduced, delicate drawing with spatial depth. Provenance: - Private collection, Northern Germany. - Our work from the early period shows Richard Tuttle still entirely committed to drawing as the medium of his artistic expression. The importance of spatiality, which is decisive for Tuttle's further sculptural work, is the key component in our drawing. The formal language is simple, enigmatic, abstract - also poetic and reduced. From the very beginning, Tuttle's impulses in art were to question fundamental conventions and boundaries, so that the American artist is considered a decisive companion of minimalism.
