Classical Modernism Hauptmann, Ivo Seated nude. 1953. oil on canvas. 93 x 65 cm. Signed and dated. Framed. - With barely noticeable paint abrasion to the edges. Overall very good. No retouching visible under UV. The colors fresh and vivid. Provenance: - North German dealer's property - Liedigk Gallery, Hamburg. - Our nude comes from Ivo Hauptmann's late work. The artist and son of Gerhart Hauptmann had already experienced groundbreaking stages in his life: a brief but all the more important stay in Paris in 1903, where he studied at the "Académie Julian" and made the acquaintance of important avant-garde artists such as Maillol, Vuillard, Bonnard and Maurice Denis. Back in Germany, he became a pupil of Lovis Corinth from 1904. In 1913, he left Berlin and settled in Hamburg. There he co-founded the "Hamburg Secession" and spent the rest of his life in the Hanseatic city. In his late work, the strands of Hauptmann's condensed experiences converge, revealing influences from Corinth and the avant-garde, which Hauptmann realized as a personal style. The detached, loose brush and the lively, fresh colors are held by strong, black contours. The atmosphere that Hauptmann creates with his model seems natural and relaxed and a maturity is evident in Hauptmann's nude. Oil on canvas. Signed and dated.
