In a great masterly manner, he wipes expressively over the plate and creates a narrative that emphasizes the group's togetherness from the artistic formal language. He depicts the figures in powerful and nuanced side and frontal views, inviting the viewer to participate in the scene through the figure on the left in the foreground. Thematically influenced by Norse mythology, the Vikings conceal the trait of longing that inseparably links Nolde with his Nordic homeland of Schleswig-Holstein. Etching on strong Van Gelder Zonen wove paper (with watermark). Signed. - Faint foxing in margins, also on the verso. These hardly seeping through onto recto. On the verso removed traces from previous mounting in corners. All in all very good. Splendid impression, finely line-etched and ith a wonderfully nuanced toning, with wide margin and deckle edge on two sides. - One of only 5 copies. Very rare. - Provenance: Collection Anges Holthusen (née Weizsäcker), Hamburg - Printed by Kleinsorg, Sabo, Felsing.
