Signed in the plate. - Very slightly browned in outer margins, especially the upper margin, occasional tiny brown stain, paper very slightly wavy in upper margin, light handling mark in places, tiny mounting streaks verso right, occasional pale trace of color or small pale stain, good overall. Quite excellent, splendidly burnished impression of the polychrome scenery, with clearly impressed platemark and wide margins, with the scoop margin on two sides. Cramer 29, Vollard 242 - Very rare impression of the first state before any reworking, with remarque and visible plate treatment. - Sheet 44 of the extensive Bible set. Printed by Maurice Potin, Paris 1956 - Enclosed: Ders, sheet of the edition of 295 copies on Montval. - With the sound of trumpets, the people of Israel cross the Jordan with the Ark of the Covenant adorned with the Ten Commandments, on their way to the Promised Land, joyfully celebrating the festive moment. Chagall captures in a sketchy yet lively manner the moment that forms such an identity for the people; the plate features of our print with smudges of the etching's etching fluid are wonderfully visible. In comparison to the print of the edition included here, this later print focuses more strongly on the richly decorated Ark of the Covenant with the seminal Ten Commandments. Etching on wove paper. Plate-signed. - Very slightly browned in outer margins, esp. on upper margin, isolated tiny brown-stain, paper slightly buckled at top, isolated slight grip trace, verso tiny traces from previous mounting on the right, isolated faint color trace or small faint stain, all in all good.
