Classical Modernism Gilles, Werner n.d. (Coast by the sea). Late 1920s. Oil on canvas. 40.5 x 58 cm. Signed. The work not mounted on stretcher - upper edge slightly irregularly and intrinsically trimmed. Lower left corner creased. Each corner with pinholes as traces of former mounting. Slight losses of color and fine craquelure in places. Verso few wax stains. Good overall. A Mediterranean coastal view of Ischia in fresh colors from the early work of Werner Gilles. We would like to thank Dr. Marlis Zilkens for her advisory support. - Provenance: - North German dealer's estate. - Estate of the Kanus Gallery, Helgoland. - The motif most likely shows the coast near Panza with the town of Forio on Ischia. The houses at the edge of the picture are less in focus than the natural features of the island with the mountains, the green vegetation on the hills and the sea, but the island architecture is formally essential for the structure of the picture, with the houses forming a contrast to the green and blue tones on the one hand and a horizontal line between the sky, the coast and the sea on the other. Views of Ischia play a central role in Werner Gille's painterly work. His fascination goes beyond the flora and fauna and also includes themes such as the pagan significance of Italian ancient mythology as well as its position within Christian history. The inspiration that Gilles receives from the island is complex and varied in nature and quenches the thirst of the brooding and thoughtful painter in his existential questions of philosophy and poetry.
