Published by Éditions du Regard, Geneva. - The color black and calligraphic bar lines are unmistakably part of Pierre Soulages' formal language. As a legendary representative of French Art Informel, his oeuvre combines influences from American Abstract Expressionism with inspirations from Far Eastern writing. His color palette, which had always been reduced, was limited to black from 1979 onwards following an accident in the studio when black paint poured over the canvas of a painting. Concentrating on the monochrome, the artist then explored the reflective, structural and differentiated spectrum of color without restraint, discovering its extraordinary luminosity. He created expressive depictions with an impressive contrasting effect in broad, bar-like brushstrokes against a light background. By working with a single color, he creates transcendent pictorial spaces in the relationship between black and light, spaces that unfold in the moment of contemplation. Aquatint in black on strong wove paper. Signed. - Faint brown stain in margins, very slight crease mark in upper left corner, all in all very good. Splendid, extremely saturated impression with clearly impressed plate mark, showing a clear relief on the verso, wih wide margin, deckle edge on the right. - One of 200 copies. - From the portfolio "Élégie de Carthage". - Print by Alain Lambilliotte, Paris. publ. by Éditions du Regard, Geneva. - The color black and calligraphic bar lines are an unmistakable part of Pierre Soulages' formal language.
