German Post War Uhlmann, Hans o.T. 1957. Pencil on CMFabriano-Velin. 47.8 x 66.5 cm. Signed and dated lower right within the depiction. Mounted freestanding on support and framed under glass. - Verso occasional slight handling marks, especially in the lower sheet area, slight traces of color in places, small traces of mounting in the lower margin, overall very good. The drawing strongly executed. Provenance: - Berlin private collection. - We would like to thank Mr. Hans-Joachim Uhlmann for valuable information. - Geometrically outlined areas and clear, energetically drawn lines, pushed into one another, stand out from the light background, which resembles a void. With masterly, strict vehemence, Uhlmann sets fields of tension in the large-format drawing, oscillating between heaviness and apparent lightness. Around 1960, the artist abandoned all figurative and representational contexts; lines and geometric surfaces in particular now playfully create positive-negative effects, movements full of inner energy that reveal themselves from the technical-constructive composition in a variety of tensions as the expression of an abstract creative force. As one of the most important sculptors and draughtsmen of West German post-war modernism, his work is represented in numerous national and international collections, and the Berlinische Galerie is currently presenting a solo exhibition of his work (see https://berlinischegalerie.de/ausstellungen/aktuell/hans-uhlmann/). Pencil on CMFabriano wove paper. Signed and dated within the depiction on lower right. Free-standing spot-mounted to unterlying mat and framed under glass. - Isolated grip traces on the verso, esp. in lower sheet area, slight color traces in places, small traces from previous mounting at lower margin, all in all very good. Pencil strongly applied. - Provenance: Berlin private collection. - With masterly vehemence, Uhlmann sets fields of tension in the large-format drawing, oscillating between heaviness and apparent lightness.
